Glass skin is a K-Beauty trend that took the beauty world by storm in recent years. Simply explained, glass skin is dewy, glass-like complexion that most of us aspire to; the kind of skin that looks like it's somewhat treated to regular facials. It's smooth, hydrated, radiant, and, of course, glass-like. A common misconception is that this is a no-no for the acne-prone skin--- Wrong.

First things first, if you want to achieve glass skin when you're dealing with acne, you should begin by tackling the root cause of your breakouts. Before beginning any kind of skincare routine or buying any new products, you should first be aware of the type of skin you have. Does it tend to get? Oily? Or sometimes both? Do you have dark spots caused by hormonal breakouts? This will help you understand which types of treatments will be most effective for you.

In addition to this, you will also want to pay attention to how your skin is affected by changes in climate, diet, schedules, etc., as this will help alert you to any particular changes you may need to make in your skincare routine. Don’t be afraid to switch out products if you need to, your skin will thank you for it, and it will definitely show! The good news is, Korean beauty products are hyper-targeted to treat just about every specific skin condition there is so you've come to the right place 😉.

Before we begin, Its important to keep in mind that consistency is key. Koreans tend to focus on prevention and getting to the root of skin problems rather than treating when necessary. When you think about it this makes a lot of sense, prevention is better than cure.

Start with an oil-based cleanser. A lot of people worry because this sounds counterintuitive, but not all oil cleansers are created alike. Some leave a greasy residue and that feels pretty terrible, while some oil cleansers can actually strip the skin dry. Why oil based? Clean = pristine. Your first, oil-based, cleanser, is used to dissolve make-up and grime that sits on the surface of your skin, at this point you may be asking yourself, "Do I need to oil cleanse if I don't wear makeup?" Absolutely! Even if you don't wear makeup, you need an oil cleanser to melt away sebum, SPF, and pollutant, be sure to try the Heimish All Clean Balm oil cleanser which is very effective at dissolving oil-based impurities. It degunks your pores and you won’t need to tug at the skin as you do with makeup wipes, which can spread bacteria around so the skin barrier has a high chance of being compromised. Water-based cleansers cannot properly remove these impurities, so make sure to use an oil cleanser to start off your routine! allowing your second cleanse (usually a foam or stick) to tackle pollution and impurities from within the pores.

For the second step follow oil cleansing with a water-based cleanser. Double cleansing is recommended by aestheticians and dermatologists and works to gently remove the oil residue and water-based impurities such as dirt and sweat which then reduces breakouts.

STEP 3: TONER

It's important to mention that glowy skin is all about HYDRATION.
That’s where your toner comes in. Moisturizing toner is an essential step in achieving a glowy skin, because it’s all about achieving optimal hydration, which gives the skin that healthy glow. You may apply the toner in a cotton ball and dab it in a sweeping motion, or you can pour the toner in your palm and dab it with it.

We cannot talk clear and smooth skin without mentioning exfoliation. Whether using a physical exfoliator or a chemical type, this step will slough away dead skin cells that dull the skin and clog pores--Do not overdo it, though. Two to three times weekly is ideal to avoid irritations, especially if you have sensitive skin.We recommend the COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid Exfoliator

NB: Avoid using with other acids such as AHAs, BHAs, Retionols & Vitamin C.

If you skip toning step and use this as a toner make sure the liquid is fully absorbed before applying next step skincare products. This product is best for experienced users, if using it for the first time, start with once a week to build tolerance and gradually increase use to 2-3 times weekly.

* If used during the day, please be sure to apply sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.

STEP 6: SHEET MASK

K-beauty has given us some of the best skin care tips and tricks, but masks are arguably the ones the beauty world is most obsessed with. It’s hardly surprising; a skincare step where you have no choice but to kick back and relax for a while—what’s not to love? Add to that, they also happen to be the easiest way to soothe the skin, repair damage and lock in and replenish moisture. Within 10-20 minutes, you can enjoy healthier skin and a brightened complexion to boot. We’d recommend doing this 2-3 times per week.

We recommend the Benton Snail Bee High Content Mask Pack. We love it because this high content essence uses Bee Venom, EGF and various botanical based natural ingredients to help improve your rough and damaged skin from various stress and pollution. In addition to the troubled skin care, cooling effect, moisturizing, skin soothing and skin-lifting improvement, this all-in-one functional multi-care cosmetic has functional ingredients such as Arbutin and Adenoisine which helps brightening your skin and removes wrinkles.

This mask is suitable for all types of skin including sensitive and troubled skin types.

STEP 7: SERUM

This serum is a cult favourite for a reason and will be your secret to glowing and glass like skin. This serum has a honey like texture enriched with natural hanging (traditional Korean herbal medicine) which are ingredients to help fight acne and pore problems.
Enriched with 60% Propolis extract. As a skincare ingredient, propolis extract is effective for hydrating the skin improving inflamed skin. It also contain 3% Niacinamide, among the various effects of Niacinamide, it is especially helpful in controlling sebum secretion and maintaining the oil and moisture balance of the skin.

BHA 0.5%
As a fat-soluble exfoliant, it helps to remove sebum and wastes accumulated in the pores.

STEP 8: APPLY EYE CREAM

We are back with more Snail products. We know you’re probably thinking "gross", but really it works wonders. This one is by Corsx and is great for depuffing and brightening. The snail secretion filtrate is amazing at nourishing your under eyes to look more hydrated and full. While the niacinamide and the 5 peptides make your eyes look glowy.

You only need a small amount of product for it to work effectively. After a few uses, you’ll notice some major differences.

It’s also fragrance-free, which is a plus in our books.

Our other favourite eye cream is the Revive Ginseng & Retinal (2%) Eye Serum from Beauty of Joseon. BOJ has created an eye serum to deliver results on fine lines, FAST!!. It combines one of hanbang's favourite anti-ageing ingredients (ginseng root) with a vitamin A derivative. And no, that's not a typo: Retinal is very similar to retinol and will lead to the same results - however, retinal purports to do it quicker, with a much higher exfoliation rate than standard retinol. Meanwhile, macadamia and rapeseed oils moisturize and soften the skin.

STEP 9: SLATHER ON MOISTURIZER

In order to get glow-dewy skin, you have to moisturize, moisturize, and moisturize some more. When applying skincare products, you always want to start in order of consistency and apply the thinnest formula first, working your way up to the thickest (aka most occlusive) to lock in moisture and seal your skin barrier. That’s usually when your moisturizer comes in. For the most glowing results, select a moisturizer based on your skin type.

Here we recommend this moisturiser Dynasty Cream that is suitable for all skin types. This moisturizer is as luxurious and pampering as it sounds, it is enriched with nourishing hanbang (traditional Korean herbal medicine) ingredients like ginseng and rice water to moisturize, brighten and tighten skin. Ginseng has anti-inflammatory properties that calm the skin and is well-loved for its ability to help reduce signs of aging. The brightening and smoothing effects of rice water aid in fading dark spots over time and helps strengthen the moisture barrier so skin stays hydrated longer. The unique, slightly tacky texture absorbs quickly and leaves skin with a dewy, bouncy finish.

Honey extract, ceramide, and squalane lock moisture in without oiliness, while providing additional calming benefits. These ingredients help even texture and also boost collagen production for bouncy, glowing skin.

STEP 4: EXFOLIATION

STEP 10: MAKE SPF YOUR BEST FRIEND

To us, sunscreen is a non-negotiable step in any skincare routine. It must be worn every day, rain or shine....LITERALLY!

Glowy skin = healthy skin. And healthy skin = skin that’s protected against UV rays and environmental stressors. Without sunscreen, you can kiss all that hard work you just put in goodbye. That means SPF is a year-round must-have, regardless of the weather. Not only does SPF protect against premature signs of aging and sunspots, it's our number one defense in fighting against skin cancer.
